The Invincible Czars are returning to the Varsity just in time for Halloween. The Austin, Texas-based musicians and composers will bring their nightmarishly fun soundtracks to the world’s first feature-length horror film, “The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari” (1920). The band will also perform their lauded soundtrack to accompany a screening of “Nosferatu,” the world’s first Dracula movie.
The immersive, combined live soundtrack experience transports audiences back more than 100 years via age-old tales accompanied by original scores that feature an impressive blend of traditional acoustic and present-day electric instruments.
The Czars have performed for over a decade at hundreds of theaters and art houses across the U.S. and Canada with an array of sonic twists and turns. The varied compositions and instrumentation adapt individually to each film the Czars score, capturing each thrilling moment and keeping audiences engaged scene by scene.
Their scores are performed by a five-member touring ensemble using violin, flute, bass clarinet, oboe, electric guitar, bass guitar, piano, organ, glockenspiel, music box, drums, percussion, samples and loops. From delicate passages of longing and love to menacing motifs of dissonant horror and pain, each instrument plays a critical role establishing character themes and creating an aural dreamscape for the film.
Patrons are invited to get into the spirit of the season and dress in costume.
Tickets are $16.50 for each screening or $25 for both. (See link) They will also be available at the venue on the night of show when doors and the bar open at 6. Patrons are invited to get into the spirit of the season and dress in costume.
